We’re all set for a sunny weekend here at Woodside, and it’s been another busy couple of weeks with deliveries of new plants and other lovely goodies to tempt you.
Laura and the plant centre team have been busy unpacking new deliveries of gardening related gifts in the shop. Look out for our NEW range of Woodstock Chimes – these special chimes are all musically tuned to create a harmonious sound when the wind catches them. A really lovely addition to the garden in summer, and a thoughtful gift item too. For a bit of fun have a look at the dog tail hooks – perfect for hanging up dog leads or keys, and sure to bring on a smile.
On the plant side of things we have had lots of fresh deliveries this week. New in from the world-renowned and multiple Chelsea Flower Show gold medal winning nursery, Hilliers, is a delightful selection of Heucheras. If you don’t know these plants, I can’t sing their praises highly enough! They have striking evergreen foliage in a wide range of shades from fresh green and orangey yellow to deep purples. The image above should give you some idea of the colours that they come in. In the summer they produce little bells of flowers above the foliage. Heucheras are a perennial, clump forming plant that grow best in light shade in a soil that is not prone to drought or waterlogging. Some of the darker leaved varieties will tolerate full sun. Varieties we have available this week are Lime Marmalade, Forever Purple, Caramel and Midnight Rose (pictured below). Midnight Rose is one of my favourites with the foliage being splashed with pink flecks. All are priced at £9.99 each, and offer great value for money as they look good for most of the year.
We have also now got the dwarf Buddleia Buzz in stock in Candy Pink and in Indigo. These plants were new on the market a few years ago and proved to be a great success. They still require pruning hard in the spring to keep their size in check, but don’t get nearly as tall as the davidii varieties. Plant in full sun in the ground, or in a large pot, and just watch the butterflies come!
Dahlias are really useful for colour in the garden in mid-summer through to the autumn, and what better variety than the dark leaved Bishop of Llandaff with its rich red flowers. Keep dead-heading this and the flowers will keep coming. We now have these in stock, and they have masses of buds on them – just ready for planting out in the garden. Although these are a perennial variety, in reality they rarely survive the winter in our gardens – you could put them in a big pot and over-winter them in a greenhouse or conservatory if you can be bothered. They are so spectacular and flower for so many weeks, that even if they die off over the winter you’ll have had terrific value for money – they’re much cheaper than a bouquet of flowers and will last many times longer!
